Construction Supply Constraints Underscoring Importance of Experienced General Contractor

lumber prices continue to climb

If you’ve been watching any type of local or national news as of late, you’ve likely seen stories about the rising supply costs in the construction industry, as well as other industries for that matter. A recent abc11.com story in particular highlights the rapid increase in construction materials such as lumber. At Prince & Sons, we’re not immune to these cost increases, but we’ve found that during these times where cost estimates are more important than ever, it’s critical that you have a licensed general contractor who can advocate for your best interests and adjust based on market conditions that can change almost daily.

Leads Times Are Increasing for Renovation Projects

Our manufacturers are currently 6-8 weeks out on non-custom orders and 12-16 weeks out on custom orders. We’re fortunate to have home renovation jobs booked out that far in advance, but it means that we have to triple check our measurements and solidify cabinet choices as soon as possible after signing a contract. Any delay in choosing cabinetry can significantly delay a renovation project.

We’re also seeing extended lead times on doors and windows, as well as manufactured trusses. It’s safe to say that almost all construction materials are experiencing extended lead times in some capacity.

Lumber Prices Continue to Climb

Lumber prices continue to climb on a weekly, or even daily basis. This can make estimating projects a challenge and it underscores the importance of working with a company who is well versed in providing accurate and transparent estimates to ensure you know what you’re getting into when you sign a contract for any type of home renovation project. While new construction projects have seen even more exaggerated prices due to the amount of lumber required, any home renovation project will be affected by these inflated prices. Unfortunately no one knows when and if these prices will fall again, but so far it doesn’t seem to have slowed the home remodeling market in the Triangle.
