Questions to Ask Before Planning Your New Kitchen Remodel

At Prince & Sons, we’ve completed a variety of kitchen renovations in and around the Triangle area over the past several years. During this time we’ve compiled a list of common questions that we’re often asked prior to starting a kitchen remodel. We thought it would be a good idea to answer some of these questions so that potential clients can be made aware of the challenges that arise when renovating a kitchen.

Should I hire a licensed general contractor?

If you’re looking to renovate your kitchen, you may think that you can handle the project without help from a licensed general contractor. The reality is that kitchen renovations can get complicated very quickly and it helps to have a team of licensed professionals that are aware of the common problems that are encountered during a large remodel.

When you take on a DIY kitchen remodel you’re left to navigate the often-complex inspection process. If certain aspects of the project are not completed in accordance with local building codes a simple renovation job can be turned into a major nightmare. With a general contractor you’ll have a resource that’s well versed in complying with building codes. General Contractors are paid to handle the headaches that are almost guaranteed to arise daily in any construction project.

What is the end goal of your new kitchen renovation?

Before any demolition begins, it’s critical to have an idea of the end goal of your new kitchen. Are you looking to improve the functionality of your kitchen, create a large gathering space, or create a larger open floor plan? These are just a few of the common goals we often hear when working with our clients. While we as general contractors can offer our insight into certain design ideas, it’s ultimately up to the homeowner to decide the end goal of their kitchen renovation.

Do you have any specific kitchen design ideas in mind?

In addition to having an end goal when planning a kitchen renovation, it’s also helpful to have design ideas that you may have seen online, or in other people’s homes. This way we can quickly get a sense of your style as we begin to generate designs for your new kitchen.

Should I have a kitchen remodel budget in mind?

At Prince & Sons, we always suggest that our potential clients have a budget for whatever type of home renovation they’re interested in completing. This budget needs to be realistic and clear between both the general contractor as well as the client.

We typically inform clients that any kitchen renovation involving the installation of new cabinetry, solid surface countertops, updated fixtures and a backsplash should be no less than $20,000. You can spend as much as you would like, but it’s important to understand that materials, permits, plumbing, and electrical costs can add up quickly so it’s critical to understand where you are in terms of a firm budget prior to starting any type of home remodeling project.
