Project Update: Downtown Durham Historic Home Renovation Completed

At Prince & Sons’ Construction and Cabinetry, we’re extremely excited to announce that we recently completed an amazing project in downtown Durham. This property was in the Glendale Avenue area of Durham, where historic renovations are happening all around us. At Prince & Sons, it’s always our mission to renovate in such a way that the owners will be able to appreciate not only the looks of the renovation, but the underlying aspects that so many other general contractors and “flippers” often overlook. This project in particular had a number of unique challenges that forced us to really put our “thinking caps” on in terms of creating a new home that was functional for our wonderful clients.

Unique Challenges of This Historic Durham Restoration

As is the case with most any historic restoration, you never really know what you’re getting into until the walls are opened up. We had a good idea that this project was going to be a major endeavor, but it wasn’t until we began demo that we truly understood the structural issues that existed within this house. A few major issues that we had to overcome included:

  • A floor system that was over-spanned
  • Previous renovations that were poorly constructed
  • An insecure foundation

Once these issues were unearthed, we decided that it would be safer and more economical to completely demo the front of the house. This allowed us to ensure that we could bring our client’s vision to light.

Success as it Relates to a Historic Home Restoration

For most historic home renovation projects, the goal is to create a living space that resembles the original home as closely as possible while still adding in some of the latest comforts that we’ve all come to expect with any modern home. We knew this project was a success not only thanks to the amazing feedback we received from our clients, but also when there was no obvious evidence of the massive scale of this project. This home is now complete with the latest amenities including a redesigned master suite, granite countertops, stained glass windows, consistent flooring throughout the space and much more. The everyday visitor wouldn’t have a clue that the home was essentially reconstructed literally from the ground up.
