When many of our clients hire us to handle their home renovation needs they are often thinking about the bright and shiny objects like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and gleaming hardwood floors. What they’re often NOT thinking about is protecting their belongings during the entire home remodel project.
Let’s face it – home remodels can be messy. If you’re getting ready to embark on any type of renovation in your home you want to ensure that you have a good plan for protecting your belongings during construction. In this blog we’ve outlined a few tips to ensure that you’re not blindsided with what to do with your valuable belongings during your next construction project.
When you’re packing things up it’s important to focus on your most fragile items first. These items may include things like crystal, glass or china. Be sure to properly pack these items using materials such as bubble wrap to properly cushion each piece to prevent damage.
Similar to when you’re moving, organization is key not only for the general contractors but for the homeowner as well during a home renovation. Be sure to label your boxes with large letters and indicate where the items will go after the renovation is complete.
During a home renovation is a great time to think about whether you really need everything that you have to move. If you can downsize, now may be the perfect time to get rid of items that you rarely use, but take up significant space in your home. Many interior design experts say that if you haven’t used something in two or more years, then chances are fairly certain that you won’t miss the item if you were to get rid of it.
If you have a large amount of items to store during construction it may make sense to either rent a portable storage unit or have a moving container delivered to store your belongings safely and securely.
If you are worried about protecting your belongings prior to a large home remodel you can always either hire a local moving company or pay your general contractors to move the items on your behalf. Whether you choose to move the items yourself or hire someone else to do it, there is no getting around clearing out your home to prepare for a large remodeling project.
