In part one of the Bahama Full Home Renovation Project Showcase, Prince & Sons, Inc. introduced and discussed their plans to redesign and utilize the entire square footage of a 1970’s Durham, NC home through an open concept floorplan. In the second installation of the project showcase, we will share the design decisions that helped us create a truly cohesive home. 8135 Lowell Valley Rd. features a flexible living space with high quality finishes. An aesthetically pleasing color scheme connects the interior of the home to the exterior and surrounding landscape, through the use of colors and finishes that occur in the natural environment.
Upon entering the home, one of the most obvious features is the 800 Sq. Ft open floor plan great room with 3-1/4” oak hardwood floor. This creates a space that can accommodate any room configuration or style. Overlooking the great room is the chef’s kitchen, which features stainless appliances, a huge pantry, brand new “iron” color painted cabinets with soft-close hinges, a mosaic tile backsplash, undercabinet LED lighting and a vantage point, with glossy slabs of “Ashen White” Granite and a natural stone surround on the fireplace as a back drop to the entire room.
The natural ambiance was continued into the master bathroom through the use of large, earth toned tile on the floors and walls in the oversized shower. The earth tones give the space a warm relaxing feel, just like it should be. The master bathroom renovation also features a dual vanity with granite tops, square undermount sinks, and brushed nickel fixtures and accessories.
The entrance of the house closest to the driveway features a 200 square foot mud room with porcelain tile floors, that connect the two-car garage to the kitchen area. The room contains enough space to install built-in shelving for extra storage, to create a grand entrance to the home, or just a good place to kick off those muddy boots.
When making design decisions for the exterior appearance, the ultimate goal was to connect the color scheme with the interior, so that both spaces would feel one in the same. We used the same color as our cabinets for the shutters and used a lighter shade of that for the body of the home. Some of the upgrades featured on the exterior include, new wood handrails, new gutters, new oil-rubbed bronze lantern style electrical fixtures, new shutters, all new windows and all new foundation vents.
The landscape is commonly an element that gets overlooked, but Prince & Sons, Inc. knows that it’s one of the most important parts of a “home”. When designing the landscape, the goal was to soften the entrance of the home while also keeping a uniform, formal sense. This was carried out through the use of ornamental grasses which were installed in a symmetrical arrangement, while connecting to the color scheme of the house using bloom/foliage color of purples, golds, and dark greens.
This project took exactly six months to complete from closing to listing and we know it will be the perfect home for someone. One of the most difficult challenges when shopping for a new home is visualizing the space as your own, which is why Prince & Sons, Inc brought in Artist and Galleria D’arte Art Director, Suzanne O’hara, to outfit the home with relevant pieces, some of which were specially created for the open house event. Suzanne played off the color scheme and setting of the home through incorporated shades of blue and tranquil country landscape scenes. Prince & Sons, Inc was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to team up with this talented artist and looks forward to working together in the future. Galleria D’arte is located in downtown South Boston, VA. All pieces displayed will be on sale during the open house event.
