Project Showcase: Bahama Full Home Renovation Part 1

Prince & Sons, Inc. purchased a home in Bahama, NC in February of this year with plans to redesign the floor plan and update the entire interior of the home. We were excited about the opportunity to use our years of experience as local general contractors to bring a 1978 home into the 21st century. Over the next few weeks, we will discuss the steps we took to perform this complete home remodel and update the residence to create a beautiful home. This property will be available for purchase in the near future, so if you are interested in purchasing, please do not hesitate to contact our company’s realtor, Kim Hanan, at Fonville Morisey.

Design Changes

Once we secured the contract on the home we began our design plans. One of the most dramatic changes was exercising an open floor plan concept. The original house plan had a separate kitchen, dining room, formal living room and a den with a wood-burning fireplace. The layout of these four separate rooms allowed us to remove the interior walls to create one large room with an amazing amount of open space. This open floor plan allows for easy movement throughout the area, as well as plenty of room for social gatherings. The floor plan change also allowed us to perform a full kitchen renovation as well.

Updated Laundry Area and Pantry Storage

Another major change to the floor plan involved the relocation of the laundry area. The original laundry room was located on the opposite end of the home from the bedrooms, which created an awkward plan for day-to-day laundry needs. Prince & Sons redesigned the hall bathroom, master bedroom and master bathroom to accommodate the new location of the laundry room, now in the hallway beside all of the bedroom doors, which permits washing and drying clothes to be a much easier task. Relocating the laundry area allowed the opportunity and location for a walk-in pantry adjacent to the kitchen, creating a plentiful area for kitchen storage.

Newly Created Mud Room

Our last major design change focused on the “mud room,” which was originally an open breezeway connecting the 2-car garage to the main residence. Closing in the breezeway by installing windows and an entry door created a room that serves many useful purposes. While it is unconditioned, this open 200-square foot room leaves many possibilities to the new owner.

Updated Hardwood Flooring

With all of these interior room design changes, we decided to replace most of the floor system in the residence, allowing us to install hardwood flooring throughout the open area of the home. The floor replacement ensured that the flooring remained on the same level so there would be no uneven transitions in the main areas until the floor type changes at the bathroom and bedroom entrances.

As a general contracting company in the Durham area, Prince and Sons, Inc., is attentive to the needs and wishes of its clients. We designed this project with the hope of fitting the needs of the modern-day family with an open concept floor plan and updated bathrooms, as well as a completely renovated kitchen.
